Take these necessary fire safety precautions

Posted on Sunday, May 20th, 2012 at 3:20 am

House fires happen often, can get out of control quickly and are devastating. Take all fire safety and protection precautions to prevent a fire from destroying your home. Start with your yard. In hot dry climates, keep your yard free of dead grass or dead plants. Dead yard waste is very flammable and will make a fire spread rapidly, which can also result in spreading the fire throughout your neighborhood. Avoid having deadbolts that lock with an inside key, in the event of a fire you need to be able to evacuate as quick as possible and having to get your key and unlock your door can take up too much time. Fill your home with smoke detectors, have some on every floor of your home and in or at least near every room. It is safest to have both ionization and photoelectric smoke detectors, or find a smoke detector that have both sensors on it. For even more protection in your home put carbon monoxide detectors as well. Carbon monoxide can be deadly and not easily detected without a a CO detector. Pay attention when putting your cigarette or cigar out. People who do not pay attention can accidentally throw a still lit one into the trash and catch your can on fire. While emptying out your ash tray be sure all butts are completely cooled off, run cold water over them first just to be sure. If your building your house from the ground up use fire proof materials, especially use fire proof shingles on your roof. Have your address easily visible so firefighters wont have trouble finding your home.

Things you should do to prevent a fire

Posted on Saturday, May 19th, 2012 at 1:03 am

These are fire safety tips you should keep in mind to prevent a fire: Install smoke detectors: Check smoke detectors once a month and change the batteries at least once a year. Smoke detectors sense abnormal amounts of smoke or invisible combustion gases in the air. They can detect both smoldering and burning fires. At least one smoke detector should be installed on every level of a structure. Purchase smoke detectors labeled by the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) or Factory Mutual (FM). Post emergency numbers near telephones: Be aware that if a fire threatens your home, you should not place the call to emergency services from inside the home. It is better to get out and place the call to fire authorities from a safe location outside the home. Make sure you have a safe fire escape method for all situations: You may have installed a very expensive home security system. But if you cannot escape the burning structure you have a false level of confidence. Space Heaters Need Space: Keep portable and space heaters at least 3 feet from anything that may burn. Never leave heaters on when you leave home or go to sleep. Children and pets should always be kept away from them.

Do you know the Norse men?

Posted on Wednesday, May 16th, 2012 at 8:27 pm

The Vikings were great warriors but however people often fail and overlook other aspects about them. They initially started out as farmers and tried hard to sustain themselves. However with the harsh Scandinavian climate and terrain it became difficult to maintain food for themselves. Thus, they resorted to plundering other lands. They were efficient seafarers and often were also traders and acted as merchants. Their society was a male dominated one where women were left behind yet they shared a better place in society compared to other women during the medieval ages.

Where to Buy Fire Extinguishers

Posted on Sunday, May 13th, 2012 at 1:24 pm

No home should be without a fire extinguisher. In fact, fire safety experts suggest placing a fire extinguisher in every room of a home. Finding fire extinguishers for sale is not that hard because most hardware stores or home improvement centers carry them. You will want to buy your fire extinguisher from a trusted retail establishment carrying quality merchandise. There are many brands of fire extinguishers for home use, and the most popular brand is Kidde. You should never attempt to buy a fire extinguisher that is considered used or not from a trusted choice. If you do buy a used fire extinguisher, you should make sure it is fully charged and ready to go in case of a fire.

Home Safety For Children Is One Of The Parents First Jobs

Posted on Saturday, May 12th, 2012 at 11:05 am

Home safety for children begins before they are even up and about and able to get into trouble. So many things can be done around the home to prevent accidents in small children. Covering electrical outlets with plastic plugs is a very easy and inexpensive precaution. Keeping lighters and matches away from children is best to do even before they are crawling and can find them for themselves. Making sure cords and wires are safely wrapped up and out of the way of crawling children is a wise idea that can prevent children from being strangled or pulling an object onto themselves. Go through your home to make sure you have removed all these hazards before any accidents can occur.

Important Senior Home Safety Tips

Posted on Thursday, May 10th, 2012 at 6:27 am

The most common injury to an elderly person is due to falling. Simple senior home safety tips can be applied to reduce the risk of falling in a home. One tip is to always make sure the floors and walkways are always object free, and any rugs on the floor should have rubber backing or be firmly taped to the floor to avoid sliding. If there are any stairs in the home, they need to be clear of objects as well and any loose steps should be fixed. Lighting should be placed along the stair case as well. Bath tubs are a common place for seniors to slip and fall. A non-stick rubber mat should be applied to the tub or shower floor to reduce slipping. Simple steps like these can significantly reduce the risk of falling and becoming seriously injured.
